Each village in East Kintyre is unique in its own way

Carradale Harbour

Carradale

The focal point for visitors to this small, quiet village remains the harbour. Close your eyes and, with the sea air in your lungs and the gentle jingle of the boats’ rigging in your ears, you can almost imagine the days from the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries when this would have been bustling with the toing and froing of local fishermen.

Peninver

Peninver

A tranquil retreat on Ardnacross Bay, it boasts magnificent views out towards the island of Arran and the unmistakable rocky outpost that is Ailsa Craig. Its long, white sandy beach is not only popular with locals and visitors but also the resident seals – on a clear day, it’s possible to spot dolphins and porpoises too.

Saddell Castle

Saddell

Saddell is a small hamlet of houses that also form the gateway to some of Kintyre’s most treasured architectural antiquities. These include the ruins of a Cistercian Abbey founded around 1160 by Somerled and completed by his son, whose descendants became the Clan MacDonald and eventual Lords of the Isles.

Grogport

Grogport

Today Grogport, which lies just north of the village of Carradale, is just as popular as an all-year-round holiday base for exploring the length and breadth of the Kintyre peninsula. As well as its white sandy beach there is a picnic spot nearby – ideal for al fresco dining and enjoying wonderful views across Kilbrannan Sound to Arran.
